Mason Rudolph is now The Pittsburgh Steelers Starter and this has been his first week of practice in that role since Big Ben sustained an elbow injury that will require the rest of this season to recover. This is a big adjustment and Mason spoke to the media earlier today and was asked how the first week is going preparing as a starter. Mason sounds confident but humble.
Mason : ” First week’s good. That last time I got a full week’s reps was in training camp for the first few preseason games. So, having that muscle memory of the week and going through all of that’s priceless. I thought we had a good couple of days. Made some mistakes yesterday, but that’s just the process of the week. You’re not going to perfect your first practice, but it’s just a process and we’re going to work out the kinks. “
We like the sound of that, Mason seems very well grounded and focused on what he has to do. It’s only the beginning of his journey as a starter.
Mason says he is not changing his demeanor now that he is the starting QB. He wants to make sure that he has respect and will not pretend to be someone he’s not by calling out other players.
Mason : “No, I’m not going to be someone that I’m not. I’m going to be the same guy that I was last week, and I think everyone will respect that. If I was trying to be Mr. Vocal, calling people out, that’s not me, that’s not who I am. I think they would see that change and dislike that more than me just being myself.
When asked about his confidence for Sunday’s game Mason had this to say.
Mason: “I want to win. There’s a lot of things I want to do, but the only goal for me, for us, is to win and get back on track. I like to throw the ball. I obviously like to run the ball with the offensive line that we have. It is a pretty awesome for a young quarterback and they lead the way whether it is run blocking or protection. “
